Founded in 1797 as Hartwick Seminary as stipulated in the will of John Christopher Hartwick. In 1927 Hartwick Seminary and the New York Synod conducted a $500,000.00 campaign for a "Greater Hartwick." Included in this plan was an expansion of its collegiate program to a 4 year college. The chapter was founded through the efforts of Forrest W. Miller in 1959. In 1960, Miller was chosen as the first President.
